Pamela Porter - March 22, 2011

While pregnant with their first child, Vancouver poet and novelist Pamela Porter and her husband travelled to Nicaragua and Guatemala to document the experiences of people caught in the Contra war and the government-sponsored terror against Guatemalan teachers and aid workers. Later, with two children, they worked in Angola and Ghana, where Pamela taught English during the day, and at night they delivered food to homeless children. These experiences inform her collection Cathedral.

Note: Thanks to gremlin-like activity, the audio file of Pamela’s reading was corrupted (fume, curse). Luckily the interview survived.

January 18, 2011 Rob Welch Interview

Rob takes you down to a place in the Art Bar, you can hear his poems go by You can stay the night with him. And you know he’s half English but that’s why you want to be there and he feeds you toast and marmalade that are tasted from white pages. Just when you think there’s no better he gets you on his wavelength and lets the poem answer that you’ve always been a lover. And you want to listen to him you want to listen blind and you know that he can win you because you’ve heard his British accent in your mind.

Melding an acting, and theater arts background with the constant of writing, Valentino Assenza has emerged as an engaging spoken word performer. He takes all the attributes contained within the larger than life presence that he brings on stage, and reaches deep into emotions of happiness, sadness, love, and bleeds his poetry onstage to his audience. A spoken word performance from Valentino, sends you on a roller coaster ride of emotions, you'll feel like busting a gut laughing one minute, and notice yourself welling up with tears the next

Pople’s accent has the crisp and clear enunciation most Canadians can only envy and marvel at. With delightful wit he explained that English poets are not meant to admit they like their own work. But he did confess to liking his own poetry, from time to time.

She won the 1998 Governor General Award for White Stone, her first book. Bolster read from her next intended poetry collection, tentatively titled A Page from the Wonders of Life on Earth. Like Penned, this project tackles what she calls the “middle landscape” of zoos and gardens. Her quiet intensity as a reader held the room absolutely rapt. She signed books during every break, taking time to chat with each person who approached her. Bolster teaches Creative Writing at Concordia University in Montreal – those lucky students!

Andreas Gripp has 11 poetry books to his credit. He read from his latest, Anathema: Poems Selected and New. He apologized at one point that his recent poems were “depressing.” Katherine L. As to his philosophy about writing, Gripp feels that poetry should be more “accessible,” and that we “need to write for people, and not to impress other poets/editors/publishers/grant agencies.” Amen to that!

Sandy Pool - March 30, 2010

Sandy Pool was recently dismayed to realize that she writes a lot about murder, extinction and death. Nonetheless she seems to have a lot of friends. The night was populated overwhelmingly by people from her online meetup group. And folks say the web discourages human contact.

Here is an excerpt from Sandy's book Exploding Into Night (Guernica Editions) in what she calls her "trademark stunted lyric style":

Suddenly, it is cold. The moon arrives, heaves her swollen belly.
I never expected the slight indifference, ice in our hair.
What is it you want to say? Say it.
I have never loved you properly, or tried to.
